New visiting professor to teach graphic motion

“I believe God is truly a God of creativity and has given us all a channel of light we can tap into if we aren’t too afraid to trust it,” says Luke Gibson, graphic designer and visiting faculty for the academic year of 2021-22. “I want my work [and teaching] to help people process emotion and find meaning in the world.”

Gibson grew up in the southwestern United States, and in his own words was, “a lover of all things remote and mysterious.” This led him to study graphic design at BYU and use his designs to better explore both the world within us and the world around us.

“Luke Gibson will be the first hire in the department to belong to the Interdisciplinary area, which is something we’ve never had before in Design,” says department chair Brent Barson. “He doesn’t reside solely in Animation, Illustration, Graphic Design, or Photography, but all these areas’ students will benefit from his motion design classes.”

Being able to animate and having a background knowledge of motion graphics is becoming a valuable skill for people in all areas of art. Particularly in his unique visual meditation, Gibson has shown his experience in motion graphics and using them for unconventional and special purposes, as well as using them in a world that’s increasingly demanding more creators’ skill in animation. In a world of internet, social media, and marketing, such abilities are valuable for new members of the creative industry.

“I’ve always felt that BYU is truly a place of light and safety, and I wanted to be a part of building that,” says Gibson.

Gibson's process of exploring the unknown has lead him through a BFA in Graphic Design at Brigham Young University, a rich experience working at branding agencies in New York City, managing a freelance business, and teaching a wide range of university courses. Most recently, he has pursued an MFA in Motion Design Media at the Savannah College of Art & Design.
